Canal 13 television in Chile and Colomba Films have recently produced and broadcast a short documentary film about the University of Utah’s involvement in the LUKE Arm project for the science program, “At the Edge of Fiction.”

The LUKE Arm is a joint research project involving a team led by U biomedical engineering associate professor Gregory Clark and DEKA Research & Development Corp., a New Hampshire-based company founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen. It involves the development of a motorized prosthetic arm that can also mimic the sensation of touching objects by sending the appropriate signals to the brain. The prosthetic was dubbed the “LUKE Arm” after Luke Skywalker’s motorized hand in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
