Freethink Media, which produces in-depth videos on some of the most amazing technological projects in the country, has created a new video and story on the work of University of Utah mechanical engineering assistant professor Tommaso Lenzi, who is leading a team developing a motorized leg for amputees that operates with artificial intelligence.
The work in Lenzi’s Bionic Engineering Lab involves a powered prosthetic lower limb that is lighter than others and can think on its own, working symbiotically by reading the user’s movements. The result is a prosthetic leg that allows more natural movement, including the ability to climb stairs more effectively.
