School of Computing professor Charles Hansen has been appointed as a Distinguished Professor of Computing at the University of Utah. The title of Distinguished Professor is a rare and prestigious honor granted by the University of Utah to faculty who meet the highest standards of scholarship, international stature, and dedication to teaching and service.
“Professor Hansen has had an enormous impact on the field of scientific visualization,” said Ross Whitaker, Director of the School of Computing. “The images produced from the technology and software he has created are stunning and influential, and the field has regularly recognized him for these contributions. This honor of Distinguished Professor is well deserved.”
Hansen will be recognized for this honor during the College of Engineering Convocation on May 3rd.
He received his bachelor’s in applied computer science from Memphis State University and a doctorate in computer science from the U. In 1997, Hansen joined the U full time as a research associate professor in the then Department of Computer Science. He became an associate professor in 1998 and was named associate director of the department in 2001 and again in 2008. In 2003, he became associate director of the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the U and was named a full professor in 2005.
Hansen’s research has largely focused on large-scale scientific visualization, rendering techniques and computer graphics.
