I have been involved in SWE for more than two years now and have held multiple officer positions including social committee chair and treasurer. With this involvement, I have learned what reports, budgets, and other behind-the-scene logistics are required to successfully run our section that other members are not aware of. Also, I can honestly say that SWE played a significant role in my life as a woman in engineering by helping me build a stronger resume, get internships, and learn to better delegate tasks. As president, I would be dedicated to providing other women in engineering the same opportunities that SWE has provided for me.

I will be starting my Junior year in Chemical Engineering this fall. After switching from Biology to Chem E fall of 2011 I knew engineering was where I belonged; I never bragged about my bio major, and now at family gatherings (and when I run into friends from high school) I proudly start the “So what are you studying?” conversations because I love telling people I am a lady engineer. I want to share that passion, and especially with more females, so SWE is a natural fit. I have been involved with SWE since my freshman engineering year; serving on the fundraising committee, and most recently acting as a co-chair on the outreach committee. I feel both of these experiences have shaped my goals as VP for SWE which are to increase membership; through outreach to new and current members and then retaining these members; and to increase funding for our club, which would enable us to fund our awesome activities which will then get our name out there and create interest.

I have been involved with SWE for three years now and will be graduating in spring of 2014. As the Social Committee Chair I have helped organize several activities and volunteered at many others. I am excited to be taking on a larger role in the University of Utah SWE chapter as the Treasurer. I feel I possess those qualities which are needed in a Treasurer such as proactivity and timeliness. As the Treasurer, I hope to provide a solid foundation to support our events so that we can make the U of U SWE chapter even bigger and better.

Secretary

Email: carinaehahn@gmail.com

I am Carina Hahn and I am currently a sophomore in Materials Science Engineering. I am also minoring in French, Dance, and Chemistry. I am originally from Portland, Oregon. On campus I am also involved as a Peer Advisor for the LEAP Program, I am a site leader for the Bennion Center’s Alternative Fall Break, I am a Service Learning Scholar, I am involved in the honors college. I love to ski, race bikes, volunteer, and I especially like going to school here and being involved in SWE. My first year I was the Freshman representative for AIChE and the Materials Science Department Representative for SWE, then last year I was the Secretary for SWE. This year I want to be secretary again because I loved my position so much. I took notes at all officer meetings and helped get fliers made for events. I worked on getting the bylaws typed up and put on the blog for everyone to see. For this next year I plan to help organize all of the ways that our section communicates with its members. I want to get information for events earlier so I can get fliers made sooner. I also want to work with the social and publicity committees to have more social events and have publicity more involved with getting information out to students. I love being involved in SWE and I am excited for everything we can get accomplished next year.

I have been involved in SWE for a year now. I got involved at the beginning of my freshman year. Last year I was the civil engineering department representative. SWE has made me more proud to be a woman in engineering. I enjoy being around the people I work with in SWE and SWE has made it possible for me to be a part of some great events. I hope to be able to go on and encourage other woman to be interested in engineering as well as SWE because I know for me it’s been a great experience so far.

I’m Caroline Biggs and I’m going to be a Junior this fall in Mechanical Engineering. Studying engineering has been the best decision I ever made because it has opened up so many opportunities and I’ve met some extraordinary people. Many of these people through SWE! I recently became an active member of our SWE section as the department representative for Mechanical Engineering and this year I will be the Chair of the Social Committee, as well as awards coordinator. SWE has introduced me to so many fantastic women in engineering, and I am inspired by each and every one of them. It also provides an excellent support system, and a network of opportunities you can’t find elsewhere.

Other than SWE and engineering, I enjoy skiing, mountain biking, and if I’m not in the computer lab, I’m most definitely in the gym. Health and fitness is a HUGE part of my life, as well as my lovely group of friends. With my role as social committee chair I want to introduce more people to SWE so they can see how great it is too!
