June 18 - June 22, 2012
What is Hi-GEAR?
Hi-GEAR stands for GIrls Engineering Abilities Realized and is a special week-long camp for female high school students. Hi-GEAR is designed to exposed students to a 8 areas of engineering and computer science with hands-on experiential learning, collaborative team projects and field trips. Participants will 1) interact with professionals in the field 2) have an opportunity to question female students currently in engineering programs and 3) receive advice on how to prepare for college (i.e. admissions, financial aid, etc). Participants interact on a daily basis with Hi-GEAR mentors (female college engineering students, staff and faculty) who guide them through this program. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn scholarships to study engineering as a college student at the University of Utah.
Past activities have included: creating a bike turn signal shirt, building your own text messenger, creating your own short film, distillation of perfume, creating your own bioreactor, tours of a potato chip manufacturing plant, bridge building contest, creating your own composites, designing your own tuning fork.
When is Hi-GEAR?
Hi-GEAR will be held June 18 - June 22, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day.

5th Annual Exploring Engineering Camp for High School Students (ages 14-18)
What is the focus of the camp?
Bio-Innovation is a leading force in the changing face of medicine, scientific discovery, our environment and economic growth. To innovate is to create or change process, product, technology or ideas in a new and substantial manner. The goal for all engineers is to work together to promote better living conditions for the world’s citizens while limiting their footprint on the environment. Students who attend the 5th Annual Exploring Engineering Camp will explore many disciplines of engineering and their individual innovations Join us along with other high school students, researchers, and students from the University Of Utah College Of Engineering for our 5th Annual Engineering Camp.
This 3-day summer camp experience will give participants an exposure to technologies and activities that encourage the use of problem-solving skills. Students’ will enjoy experiences in Chemical, Electrical, Civil and Environmental, Computer, Mechanical, Materials, and Bioengineering as they get a chance to “try on engineering” and see if it could be a good fit for them!

Elementary Engineering Week (5th or 6th grade classes)
March 26 - March 30, 2012
A FREE program and an excellent opportunity to engage older elementary students (grades 5 - 6) in the practical application of engineering concepts and scientific principles. Awards and prizes will be given to each school that participates fully in Elementary Engineering Week activities.
This event was created with the following goals in mind:
- To introduce students to the field of engineering and the University of Utah.
- To encourage continued interest in math and science.
- To share this experience with students from as many different schools as possible.
These goals are achieved primarily through the following event agenda:
- 9:15 - 9:45 am: Students arrive / icebreaker games
- 9:45 - 10:00 am: Welcome and explanation of event
- 10:00 - 12:15 pm: Engineering Activities (rotations) Fish Blitz, Straw Tower Construction or Catapult Design Contest(Classroom time before event is required for this activity - curriculum and competition rules will be sent to participating schools one month prior to event.)
- 12:15 - 12:30 pm: Wrap-up, announcement of activity team winners
Registration is now open.Click here to register
Complete and submit the registration by 5:00 pm on February 10, 2012. Once your registration has been submitted, the 'primary contact person' listed on your form will receive an email confirmation. Please make sure you provide the correct email address. If this email confirmation is not received within 24 hours after submission, please try again.
First priority will be given to the schools (not classes) that have never attended Elementary Engineering Week before. All other schools will be added to the attendance list based on the order their form was received by our office. After the event fills to capacity, the remaining schools will be placed on a wait list (in case of cancellations).
Each school must limit participation to EITHER 5th OR 6th grade classes. MESA clubs are welcome to attend as well. This will enable more schools to participate this year. We are planning an exciting Elementary Engineering Week and hope to provide your students with a memorable learning experience.
