Elementary Engineering Week
April 13-17, 2009
This is a FREE program and is an excellent opportunity to engage older elementary students (grades 5 - 6) in the practical application of engineering concepts and scientific principles. We hope that students will enjoy learning about the way that science impacts our everyday life and that this hands-on program encourages all students to improve their science aptitude. Awards and prizes will be given to each school that participates fully in Elementary Engineering Week activities.
This event was created with the following goals in mind:
- To introduce students to the field of engineering and the University of Utah.
- To encourage continued interest in math and science.
- To share this experience with students from as many different schools as possible.
These goals are achieved primarily through the following event agenda:
9:15 - 9:45 am: Students arrive / icebreaker games
9:45 - 10:00 am: Welcome and explanation of event
10:00 - 12:15 pm: Engineering Activities (rotations)
Fish Blitz, Straw Tower Construction or Catapult Design Contest(Classroom time before event is required for this activity - curriculum and competition rules will be sent to participating schools one month prior to event.)
12:15 - 12:30 pm: Wrap-up, announcement of activity team winners
Registration Process - Registration is online!
Register online @ http://www.coe.utah.edu/coeforms/eeweek_mailform.php.
Complete and submit the registration form by 5:00 pm on February 13, 2009. Once your registration has been submitted, the 'primary contact person' listed on your form will receive an email confirmation. If this email confirmation is not received within 24 hours after submission, please try again.
First priority will be given to the schools (not classes) that have never attended Elementary Engineering Week before. All other schools will be added to the attendance list based on the order their form was received by our office. After the event fills to capacity, the remaining schools will be placed on a wait list (in case of cancellations).
Each school must limit participation to EITHER 5th OR 6th grade classes. MESA clubs are welcome to attend as well. This will enable more schools to participate this year.
We are planning an exciting Elementary Engineering Week and hope to provide your students with a memorable learning experience. If you have any questions, please contact Deidre Schoenfeld at (801) 581-8954 or dschoenfeld@coe.utah.edu.

Hi-GEAR Girls Summer Camp
Program Information
35 young women are selected each year to participate in Hi-GEAR (Girls' Engineering Abilities Realized). This day program (111 residential slots available this year for high school students who live outside the Wasatch Front) is designed to expose these students to a variety of engineering and computer science careers with hands-on experiential learning and collaborative team projects. Some past activities include: using a distillation process to make perfume, building and programming robots, extracting DNA, building catapults for launching water balloons, and touring University research labs. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn a scholarship to study engineering as a college student at the University of Utah. All 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade female students are invited to apply.
