About the Department

With a distinguished history of advancing engineering practice, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks to build a more sustainable future for the world. Civil and environmental engineers envision, design, evaluate, and construct the physical backbone of the world's commerce, cities, and societies: from bridges and transportation systems, to pipelines and water treatment technologies, to buildings and tunnels.

Along with the department's Energy and Geoscience Institute, Center for Nuclear Technology and Engineering and Research, the department offers cutting edge graduate and undergraduate research opportunities in transportation, environmental, structural, pavement, hydraulic, geotechnical, materials, and nuclear engineering, as well as in geoscience and information systems.
