2007-2008 Engineering Ambassadors: Jon Gorzitze

Major: Electrical Engineering

Hometown: Sandy, Utah

Why I'm an Engineering Ambassador

When I was a sophomore in high school, a group of engineering students from the University of Utah came and talked about engineering. They did a few activities but what I remember most was them explaining how binary information is stored on a c.d. and read by a laser. I was interested in lasers, and they helped me know what field I wanted to study. I want to do the same with other students, especially those that are in high school.

What I'm working on

Currently I am working as an intern for Bard Access Systems. I work with a team that develops portable ultrasound machines and other medical sensing devices used to locate veins/ arteries and guide the placement of catheters into sick patients. I am currently working on a Senior Project sponsored by L-3 Communications where we are trying to develop a wireless sensor network that can locate the position of each sensor in the network using the strength of electromagnetic fields.

Why I like the U's College of Engineering

The College of Engineering at the U has many great features like great facilities that are continuously being updated. One aspect that I enjoy most about the College of Engineering is that the professors are willing to help students learn the subject material and become competent engineers. Many professors are willing to take time out of their schedules to get to know their students, help them academically, and help them gain practical experience through lab work, research opportunities, internships, and interviews with industry representatives.

What I plan to do

Right now I really don’t know. I know that I want to work as an engineer either in the optics of analog IC design fields. I would like to go back to school and study something more than engineering. Perhaps I will go for an MBA.

Do you have any hobbies outside of studying, working and attending school?

In any spare time that I get, I like to go skiing. Being a full time student has its advantageous, season passes at most ski resorts cost less than half the regular price. During the summer, I try to go mountain biking as often as possible. One of my favorite places to go mountain biking is the Skyline trail up Big Cottonwood Canyon.
