2007-2008 Engineering Ambassadors: Kay Collard

"I am an Engineering Ambassador because I wanted to share my enthusiasm and passion for technology subjects..."

Major: Chemical Engineering major with minors in Mathematics and Chemistry

Hometown: Layton, Utah

Why I'm an Engineering Ambassador

I am an Engineering Ambassador because I wanted to share my enthusiasm and passion for technology subjects and I'm hoping to inspire the next generation to join in the fun of engineering.

What I'm working on

Right now, I'm working with the University of Utah and Chevron to demineralize oil shale. The process I'm working on will make our use of gas/oil more optimal and we will be able to see other uses/chemistry for oil shale. I've also been involved with some mercury research to protect oceanic wildlife (mainly tuna-fish) and some polymer quality testing.

Why I like the U's College of Engineering

The U has female engineering professors that have acted both as mentors and role models to me; demonstrating the significance women can make in the engineering field.
The University is also endowed with fabulous opportunities for hands-on experimentation, research, and working group involvement. I also like the fact that the beginning engineering courses start with all engineering majors…perfect for making friends

What I plan to do

After graduation, I plan to work in the field of chemical engineering/material science. I hope to find a job where I can apply my interest in polymers.

Do you have any hobbies outside of studying, working and attending school?

I spend a lot of my free time dancing. I teach a Salsa and a Latin ballroom dance class. I also like to fly kites, play/watch basketball, and eat spicy food. At school, I'm active in several student organizations including (but not limited to) SWE, AICHE, and the Donald O'Connor Worshipers.
