"In my opinion, the CLEAR Program is a welcome addition to the College of Engineering, and I really hope it will continue to become a major part of engineering programs here. One of my biggest gripes in the exit interview was the lack of preparation to help us enter the professional world, and I feel your program will add significantly to the quality of engineers produced by the University of Utah. Thanks again!"

Communication, Leadership, Ethics, And Research

The CLEAR Program is a successful collaboration between the colleges of
Humanities and Engineering. The program utilizes a two pronged approach, one aspect focusing on research and faculty development, and the other emphasizing undergraduate instruction and consultation through the Center for Engineering Leadership. Faculty, graduate students, and staff of the CLEAR Program are
committed to instructional innovation through researching cutting edge teaching techniques and assessment practices.

The CLEAR Program was developed in 2003, the result of a generous grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Based on a successful pilot program in Mechanical Engineering, a team of Humanities and Engineering faculty members
came together to collaborate and propose the idea of a college-wide leadership preparation program. As a result CLEAR engineering was born.

Our interdisciplinary endeavor brings together faculty and students from the Colleges
of Humanities and Engineering to enhance undergraduate engineering education.
Our goal is to prepare engineering graduates to occupy positions of leadership in organizations. As such, we work with faculty and students to improve the communication abilities of engineering undergraduates, including speaking, writing, and interpersonal skill development. Communication instructors offer consulting services, engage in curriculum (re)development, lead class discussions and activities, and work one-on-one with students to enhance their communication competence and provide feedback on communication experiences.
