Brian Zenger, a junior in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Utah, has been named a 2014–15 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Excellence in Education Foundation. Zenger was among the 283 nationwide mathematics, science and engineering undergraduates recognized by the foundation.
Active in interdisciplinary research with campus-wide organizations such as the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute and U Health Sciences’ Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research & Management Center, Zenger has been recognized for his work on atrial fibrillation. He plans on pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. in image processing, which will enable him to continue conducting biomedical engineering research to enhance imaging techniques.
This year’s Goldwater Scholar recipients were chosen from 1,166 mathematics, science and engineering students on the basis of academic merit. The scholarship provides a maximum of $7,500 per year to cover tuition, fees, books, room and board.
“This award is important for my goal of being an active and contributing member of the medical research community by providing unique connections for increased collaborative research,” says Zenger. “The scholarship will also support my educational goals.”
