Students from more than 70 Utah middle and high schools competed in this year’s Utah Science Olympiad, the annual tournament of the mind in which teams engage in contests involving scientific concepts.

The event, hosted on the University of Utah campus, was held Saturday, April 23, and lured more than 500 students to the competitions.

Some of the challenges included building a rocket that flies the highest, manufacturing the fastest model electric car, and designing a Rube Golberg-like puzzle that ultimately performs a certain task. Student teams also constructed a robot that must move items, while others built elastic-powered gliders that had to stay aloft as long as possible.
